Quantitative Research Critique Relationship of Glucose...

Relationship of Glucose Values to Sliding Scale Insulin (Correctional Insulin) Dose Delivery and Meal Time in Acute Care Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Grand Canyon Introduction to Nursing Research NRS- 433V August 04, 2013 Relationship of Glucose Values to Sliding Scale Insulin (Correctional Insulin) Dose Delivery and Meal Time in Acute Care Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Introduction Managing blood glucose (BG) level in diabetic patients proves to be a challenging goal to insulin. The stand-alone method in many adult acute setting is the use of sliding scale insulin (SSI) to treat hyperglycemia. The goal within these settings is to maintain the BG level below 180 mg/dl (Trotter, Conaway amp; Burns, 2008). The researcher†¦show more content†¦Informed consent was approved by the institutional review board and the study was explained to participants, disclosing that 2 additional independent finger sticks were going to be done by the study investigators, before insulin dose in the morning and at lunch time. The collection of data involved three fingersticks in the morning and in the afternoon by PCA, nurse and investigator Data described the dependent and independent variables involving the time lapse between PCA’s testing and nurse testing (prior to administering insulin); insulin dose that would be given with the PCA’s BG result and the insulin dose that would be given with the nurse BG result (nurses BG were lower at the time of SSI dose) . This author appreciates the researcher’s effort in determining a cause-and-effect between the variables. Many references were offered to support the hypotheses. The NICE-SUGAR STUDY (2009) was also referenced. It show ed the efficacy of using intermediate glucose management (SSI) in lowering the blood glucose level in the acute setting. (Finfer, Chittock, Blair, Foster amp; Ronco, 2009). More importantly though, was the need to determine the relevance of SSI dose and the timing of meal intake. Data Management and Analysis A descriptive statistic, including frequency, means and standard deviation were used to summarize BG results. Repeated measures model were used to evaluate differences in glucose measurements by the time-lapseShow MoreRelatedDeveloping Management Skills404131 Words   |  1617 PagesManager: Kelly Warsak Senior Operations Supervisor: Arnold Vila Operations Specialist: Ilene Kahn Senior Art Director: Janet Slowik Interior Design: Suzanne Duda and Michael Fruhbeis Permissions Project Manager: Shannon Barbe Manager, Cover Visual Research Permissions: Karen Sanatar Manager Central Design: Jayne Conte Cover Art: Getty Images, Inc.
